If you venture out on your lunch break, or perhaps make your way to Virginia Highlands on a Thursday night, chances are you were one of the many this Fall to join in the latest craze as you ordered dinner from the side of one of Atlanta’s many food trucks. In fact, you might even have ordered from a team of former North Atlanta Warriors.

The Name: Honeysuckle Gelato. The truck: light blue with classically, elegant white writing. Honeysuckle Gelato started as a conversation between Wes Jones and Jackson Smith (Class of ’99) on a road trip in early 2010. At the time, Jackson was doing production for a gelato company in New York City and Wes was a few years into the commercial real estate game here in Atlanta. They were driving up to see good friend, and fellow NAHS alum, Jeremy Ballard as his Tulsa Hurricane were taking on the Duke Blue Devils. They continued to talk about it over the next few weeks, and eventually pitched the idea to Jeremy’s wife Khatera. She was immediately on board, and together, the three have been working non-stop since August 2010 on bringing Atlantans what is hopefully the highest quality ice cream they’ve ever had.

In Spring of 2011 Honeysuckle built out a kitchen space in West Midtown (just a few miles down Northside Drive from NAHS) and outfitted a food truck in order to showcase their gelato in many of Atlanta’s neighborhoods. After a wonderful first six months with the truck on the streets, the weather has cooled and the team has been able to focus more on their long-term strategy; placing their products with restaurants and in specialty food markets.

Wes and Jackson both hold a special place for their time spent at North Atlanta, and appreciate the support they have received from the Alumni Association.
